A woman, identified as Shawwaqa Hassan al-Shakhtour from Sbaikhan town in eastern rural Deir Ez-Zour governorate, was killed on January 3, 2025, by the explosion of a landmine of unidentified source in the badiya ‘desert area’ of Sbaikhan town. The area is under the control of the current transitional authorities in Syria.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident.
We have recorded hundreds of deaths and injuries from landmine explosions. Landmines pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives for years to come in these areas, particularly children.
