On August 24, 2024, a man, identified as Rafat Abdul Majid Abu Safi from al-Hrak city in eastern rural Daraa governorate, was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on the road connecting Mleihet al Atash village and al-Hrak city in eastern Daraa governorate. Another man, identified as Hussein Abu Safi from al-Hrak city, was injured in the same shooting. The area is under the control of Syrian regime forces.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that both Rafat and Hussein were civilians who had never been involved with any military formation. However, they have been involved in the drug trade.
SNHR is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident.
We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in their areas, to investigate this incident, and to make the investigation’s findings known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy within a fixed timetable.
