On August 11. 2024, a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) artillery detachment fired a mortar shell at al-Kashma village in eastern rural Deir Ez-Zour governorate across the Euphrates River from the point at which the SDF artillery detachment is stationed. The shell landed near a house in the village injuring a man from the village, identified as 20-year-old Suleiman al-Rahhal. The area targeted is under the control of Syrian regime forces.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that, through the attack, the SDF has unequivocally violated UN Security Council resolutions 2139 and 2254, which prohibit indiscriminate attacks.
The SDF has also violated the rules of international humanitarian law on distinguishing between civilians and members, which only aims to spread panic among civilians.
