A woman, identified as Ansam Nasser Abu al-Sel, was killed, and her four sons injured, on May 30, 2024, by the explosion of a hand grenade that was thrown at the family’s house by an unidentified individual in her home city of Nawa in western rural Daraa governorate. The children were taken to Nawa City’s Hospital for treatment. The area is under the control of Syrian regime forces.
The Syrian Network of Human Rights (SNHR) notes that Ansam’s husband is Samer Abu al-Sel, who was injured in the same attack, was an armed opposition fighter before regime forces took control of the city in July 2018, at which time he agreed to settle his security situation with the Syrian regime. He then became the commander of a regime armed group.
SNHR is still trying to locate eyewitnesses and survivors to obtain more information about the incident.
SNHR condemns all bombings targeting civilians. We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in their areas, to investigate this incident, and to make the findings of the investigation known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy within a fixed timetable.
