On May 22, 2024, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) patrolmen opened fire indiscriminately at civilians using a 12.5 machine gun mounted on a military vehicle in Darnaj village in eastern Deir Ez-Zour governorate, killing three children, two of whom are siblings. This came after an SDF checkpoint in the village was attacked by unidentified parties. The area is under the control of the SDF.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that, through this killing, the SDF has again violated international human rights law. The perpetrators must be held accountable.
