On May 1, 2024, a rainstorm hit multiple areas where internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps are located in northwestern Syria. The storm formed torrential streams in low areas and valleys, destroying and damaging several tents, while water seeped into others. In total, the rainstorm destroyed 130 tents and about 100 IDPs housing units, either partially or completely. Most of the damage was concentrated in the camps of the two villages of Qah and Kafr Lousin, as well as the camps of Sham, Mariam, al-Bayt al-Shamali and al-Iman near Ma’aret Misreen town in northern rural Idlib governorate, and al-Nisriya Camp in Jendeires in northern rural Aleppo governorate.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that that these repeated occurrences further worsen the already dire living conditions of IDPs, exacerbating their existing severe hardships. We urge international relief organizations, including the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), to urgently respond to the camps’ basic needs, and provide the camps’ administration with additional tens for emergencies.
