A man, identified as Hassan Ammash al-Iliewi al-Abid, was killed on May 1, 2024, while another man, identified as Jumaa Ahmad al-Hassan, was injured, in an artillery attack by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) that targeted Hassan’s home city of al-Mayadeen in eastern rural Deir Ez-Zour governorate. The area is under the control of Syrian regime forces.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that through the act of killing, the SDF has again violated UN Security Council resolutions 2139 and 2254, which prohibit indiscriminate attacks.
The SDF has also violated the rules of international humanitarian law on distinguishing between civilians and fighters, which only aims to spread panic among civilians.
