On February 16, 2024, a rainstorm hit a number of areas of northwestern Syria where camps housing internally displaced persons (IDPs) are located. Rainwater seeped into 13 temporary IDPs housing units in al-Qatari 2 Camp in Kafrlusin village in northern rural Idlib governorate, with streams of water that formed around the housing units causing further partial damage. In al-Sami camp in Armanaz town in western rural Idlib governorate, water pooled around the tents. Additionally, in Shafaq Camp in alShwaiha village in northern rural Aleppo governorate, rainwater permeated two tents and two housing units, while in the Bunyan Gathering, near Jarablos city in eastern rural Aleppo governorate, rainwater permeated three housing units.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that that these repeated occurrences further worsen the already dire living conditions of IDPs, exacerbating their existing severe hardships. We urge international relief organizations, including the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), to urgently respond to the camps’ basic needs, and provide the camps’ administration with additional tens for emergencies.
