On January 5, 2024, an improvised explosive device (IED) placed in a garbage dumpster in Rajou Street in Afrin city in northwestern Aleppo governorate exploded, injuring three civilians including one child. The bombing also moderately damaged the area around the dumpster.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that the bombing took place in a main street in the city which is often crowded, with two schools located near the bombing site.

The area is under the control of the Syrian National Army (SNA). SNHR is still trying to locate eyewitnesses and survivors to obtain more information about the incident.

SNHR condemns all bombings targeting civilians. We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in their areas, to investigate this incident, and to make the findings of the investigation known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy within a fixed timetable.
