On December 27, 2023, a man and woman were shot dead by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) personnel in al-Hawl Camp in eastern Hasaka amid clashes between the SDF and ISIS affiliates that took place there. The SDF personnel opened fire indiscriminately, killing the two victims, both civilians. In the aftermath of the incident, the SDF suspended the work of all humanitarian organizations in the camp until further notice. The area is under the control of the SDF.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that through those two killings, the SDF has again violated international human rights law. The perpetrators must be held accountable.
