On December 27, 2023, a boy, identified as Shayban Hatem Khalasi, was killed and another four children were injured, by the explosion of a bomb, whose source we have not yet been able to identify, that had been planted on inside a motorbike which was being used to transport gas, at a checkpoint for the Syrian National Army’s (SNA) Military Police on al-Sarafees Street in al-Ashrafiya neighborhood of Afrin city in northwestern rural Aleppo governorate. The explosion took place as children were leaving school and the streets in the surrounding area were heavily crowded. The explosion also caused moderate damage at the scene of the blast. The area is under the control of the Syrian National Army.,.

. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is still trying to locate eyewitnesses and survivors to obtain more information about the incident. SNHR condemns all bombings which target and kill civilians. We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in their areas, to investigate this incident, and to make the findings of the investigation known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy within a fixed timetable.
