A man, identified as Taysir Yasser al-Khatlan, was shot dead on December 25, 2023, by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) personnel who opened fire indiscriminately after Taysir shot his gun in the air in celebration at his brother’s release from an SDF prison in their hometown of al-Hawayej in eastern Deir Ez-Zour governorate. The area is under the SDF’s control.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that through this killing, the SDF has again violated international human rights law. The perpetrators must be held accountable.
