A man, identified as 34-year-old Mohammad Adnan J’ara was shot dead on December 25, 2023, by gunmen we have not been able to identify from a passing motorbike in his hometown of Tal Shehab town in western rural Daraa governorate.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that Mohammad was a civilian who had never been involved with any military body. However, he was the brother of Eyad J’ara, a former armed opposition leader who was himself assassinated by unidentified gunmen a few weeks earlier, on November 12, also in western rural Daraa governorate.
The area is under the control of Syrian regime forces. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident. We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in their areas, to investigate this incident, and to make the investigation’s findings known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy within a fixed timetable.
