A 64-year-old man, identified as Ramzi Mahmoud al-Mheithawi from Labbin village in western rural Suwayda governorate, was shot dead on November 1, 2023, by gunmen we have not yet been able to identify in the Thahr al-Jabala area to the east of Suwayda city, while he was on his way to check on some agricultural land he owns.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that Ramzi, who worked as an electrical engineer, had been involved in the peaceful protests taking place in Suwayda governorate. He is also a co-founder of Suwayda’s Engineers Society.
SNHR is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident. We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in their areas, to investigate this incident, and to make the findings of the investigation known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy within a fixed timetable.
