A 35-year-old man, identified as Jbawi Abdul Karim al-Ghbiti from al-Ghariya al-Gharbiya town in eastern Daraa governorate, was killed on September 3, 2023, by the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED) whose source we have not yet been able to identify near his workplace in eastern rural Dara governorate.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that Jbawi was a former regime soldier who defected and joined the armed opposition during the period when it was in control of Daraa. He received his settlement card in July 2018 after Syrian regime forces regained control of the governorate, at which point he completely retired from military life.
The area is currently under the control of Syrian regime forces. SNHR is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident. SNHR condemns all bombings targeting civilians. We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in their areas, to investigate this incident, and to make the findings of the investigation known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy within a fixed timetable.
