Two women, identified as Fatima Mohammad al-Saleh and Salma Ismail al-Louha, were killed on September 2, 2023, in an artillery attack by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) who fired multiple shells at Hajin city in eastern rural Deir Ez-Zour governorate. The shelling also injured 21 civilians to varying degrees.
The area is under the control of the SDF. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that this incident comes amid ongoing clashes between the SDF and Deir Ez-Zour Military Council backed by Arab tribes, which broke out on August 29, 2023.
SNHR condemns all killings no matter which party is responsible. We call for bringing an immediate end to the fighting to ensure the safety of civilians in the area, and to prevent any further damage to civilian objects.
