On August 29, 2023, armed clashes erupted between Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Deir Ez-Zour Military Council backed by Arab tribes from the region. The clashes, which involve the use of light and medium weapons, are continuing in villages and towns across rural Deir Ez-Zour governorate. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) has documented the killing of nine civilians, including one child and one woman, by SDF personnel who shot the victims dead during raids on their homes.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that the clashes are still going on as of this writing, with the number of casualties increasing.
The area is under the control of the SDF. SNHR notes that, through this and other acts of killing, the SDF has violated international human rights law. The perpetrators must be held accountable.
