A 20-year-old man, identified as Hosam Ali al-Jasim, was killed on July 24, 2023, by the explosion of a landmine whose source we have not been able to identify while he was herding sheep in agricultural land near his home village of Kherbat al-Shyab (Mazra’et al-Haj Ali) in the rural areas surrounding Manbij city in eastern Aleppo governorate. The area, which is close to the dividing lines between the territories controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and those controlled by Syrian regime forces, is under the control of the SDF. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident.

We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in areas under their control, and to locate and remove landmines planted in these areas. We have documented hundreds of deaths and injuries resulting from landmine explosions, which pose a serious, long-term threat, especially to children, that will last for years to come.
