A man, identified as Haytham al-Haj Omar, was shot dead on June 30, 2023, by personnel from the Syrian National Army’s (SNA) Military Police who opened fire at the car he was in in his home city of Marea in the eastern suburbs of Aleppo governorate, during a gunfight between him and the officers that broke out as he was fleeing after they tried to arrest him. Haytham was accused of a number of crimes related to drug-dealing and drug use.
The area is under the control of the SNA. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that through this act, the SNA has violated international human rights law, and that the perpetrators must be held accountable.
