A boy, identified as 12-year-old Ahmad Hayel al-Hmoud from al-Fan al-Shamali village in the northeastern suburbs of Hama governorate, was killed on June 2, 2023, by the explosion of landmine whose source we have not yet been able to identify to the south of the village’s school, while he was picking up flinders roses with other children. Two other children were wounded by the explosion as well.
The area is currently under the control of the Syrian regime. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident.
We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in areas under their control, and to locate and remove landmines planted in these areas. We have documented hundreds of deaths and injuries resulting from the explosions of landmines, which pose a serious, long-term threat, especially to children, which will last for years to come.
