A man, identified as 35-year-old Mohammad Khalil al-Aboud, from al-Tayha village in the suburbs of Manbej city in the northeastern suburbs of Aleppo governorate, was shot dead on June 1, 2023, by Syrian regime forces personnel near the village’s bakery; the regime forces had chased him while he was trying to smuggle food supplies from areas under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to regime-held areas without paying the fees dictated by the Syrian regime’s ‘al-Ferqa al-Rabe’a’ (Fourth Division).
The southern and southwestern parts of Manbej city is under the control of Syrian regime forces, while other areas of the city are controlled by the SDF.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that, through this act of killing, Syrian regime forces have violated international human rights law, and emphasizes that the perpetrators must be held accountable.
