A man identified as Wael Abdul Mu’ti Iliwil, born in 1983, from al-Dar al-Kabira town in the northern suburbs of Homs governorate, was arrested by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) personnel in 2022 at a checkpoint in Raqqa city, and taken to an undisclosed location. On May 4, 2023, SDF officers informed his relatives in Raqqa city that he had died and returned his body to them.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) can confirm that Wael was in good health at the time of his arrest, which makes it extremely likely that he died due to torture and medical negligence in an SDF detention center.
SNHR also stresses that approximately 4,513 of the Syrian citizens arrested by the SDF are still detained and/or forcibly disappeared in SDF detention centers. We have serious concerns for their fate.
It should be noted that nearly 90 Syrian citizens have been documented as having died due to torture inside SDF detention centers.
