Mu’awya Ilyas al-Hashish, from Tal Shehab town in the western suburbs of Daraa, was shot dead near his home in the town on April 6, 2023, by gunmen we have not yet been able to identify who were riding a motorbike.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that Mu’away was previously conscripted as a soldier with the Syrian regime’s al-Ferqa al-Rabe’a (Fourth Division). Before that, he was a member of an armed opposition faction, agreeing to a security settlement with the Syrian regime in July 2018 when regime forces took over the area.
The area is under the control of Syrian regime forces.

SNHR is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident. We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in their areas and to investigate this incident and make the findings of the investigation known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy within a fixed timetable.
