On March 18, 2023, a rainstorm hit an area housing multiple IDP camps and shelters housing those affected the earthquake in the northern and western suburbs of Idlib governorate. The torrential flooding created by the rainstorm caused damage ranging from moderate to heavy to about 650 tents in roughly 40 different camps and shelter centers. As a result, some of the tents were washed away and the surrounding soil was reduced to mud or completely flooded in the low-lying areas, with the water entering and flooding the tents.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights notes that these reoccurring severe weather conditions only intensify the suffering of the IDPs and bring new challenges for the already traumatized IDPs.

We call on the international relief organizations, including the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, to urgently respond to the humanitarian needs of the camps’ residents and provide the camps’ administrations with more tents for emergencies.
