Abdul Karim Ahmad al-Shabeib, a 33-year-old man from Mardikh village in the eastern suburbs of Idlib governorate, was arrested in November 2021 by Hay’at Tarhrir al-Sham (HTS) personnel, in a raid on his place of residence in the Atama Gathering of Camps near Atama village in the northern suburbs of Idlib governorate.

On March 12, 2023, we received information confirming that HTS had delivered Abdul Karim’s dead body to the forensic medicine office in Idlib city after he was executed by being shot dead in an HTS detention center. His family refused to accept his body from the forensic office.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights notes that murdering an individual in this manner is an explicit violation of international human rights law and constitutes an extrajudicial killing crime, since he was executed without any fair trial, but rather in accordance with HTS’s extremist beliefs.Idlib civilian executed in an HTS detention center, March 12, 2023
