An internally displaced male civilian identified as Abu Shaima, whose name has not yet been confirmed, who originally came from al-Qouriya city in the eastern suburbs of Deir Ez-Zour governorate, was shot dead by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) personnel in al-Zer, the village where he had been living also located in the eastern suburbs of Deir Ez-Zour governorate, on January 2, 2023 during an SDF raid on the village.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights notes that, through this act of killing, the SDF has violated international human rights law, and emphasizes that the perpetrators must be held accountable.
