Hassan Mohammad al-Askar was arrested by SDF forces on October 28, 2022, after being shot by SDF personnel during a raid on his home in his hometown of Theyban, eastern suburbs of Deir Ez-Zour governorate. On October 31, 2022, SDF personnel informed his family of his death, returning his body to them the next day, November 1. SNHR can confirm that he was in poor health as a result of his injury, which makes it highly likely that he died due to medical negligence.

It is worth noting that roughly 4,224 Syrian citizens are still under arrest or enforced disappearance in SDF detention centers. We have serious concerns about their fate. We’ve documented the deaths of at least 83 Syrian citizens due to torture in SDF detention centers.
