Mahmoud Mohammad Nafisa, a child born in 2011, from Douma city in Eastern Ghouta, in the eastern suburbs of Damascus governorate, was killed, while another child was wounded, on October 24, 2022 by the explosion of cluster munitions left from previous bombing by Syrian-Russian alliance forces in agricultural land near al-Rahma Mosque, in al-Hajjariya neighbourhood of southern Douma city.
SNHR notes that the remnants of these weapons continue to pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives. We have released numerous reports on the issue of cluster munitions and weapon remnants, in which we called for providing the necessary equipment to help local residents with removing explosive remnants.
We have documented the repeated use of antipersonnel landmines by Syrian regime forces, which continue to pose a major, long-term threat to residents, especially children, which will last for years.
We have recorded hundreds of injuries resulting from cluster munitions remnants. The international community needs to intervene to protect civilians in Syria from the continued devastation wrought by these munitions and weapons remnants.
