Four young siblings aged between eight and 14 were killed by the explosion of a landmine left by an unknown party in Binnesh in Idlib governorate’s northern suburbs on September 5, 2022. The children – Safa, aged 8, Nour aged 9, Randa aged 12, and 14-year-old Ahmad Bassam al-Mustafa – were killed by the blast while they were playing in an abandoned building in the city center, with Binnesh located in an area under the joint control of armed opposition factions and Hay’at Tahrir al Sham.

SNHR notes that displaced families had been living in the abandoned building temporarily until they could find viable housing. The mine exploded on the second floor while the kids were playing near debris, which included the lethal landmine, and other remnants of previous bombardment.

SNHR is still trying to reach eyewitnesses to obtain more details of the incident.

SNHR calls on the controlling forces to protect civilians in areas under their control, and to investigate the incident and reveal their findings to the public.

We have documented hundreds of deaths and injuries caused by the explosion of landmines, which will continue to constitute a great threat to civilians for years to come, especially children.
