Misto al Omar, an ambulance driver from Babka village in western Aleppo governorate, was arrested by Hay’at Tahrir al Sham police personnel from his place of work at the Central Medical Emergency Unit in Kafr Karmin village in Aleppo governorate western suburbs on August 31, 2022, and taken to a police station in nearby al Atareb city. The arrest came in response to his posting a sarcastic comment on his Facebook account regarding one of Hay’at Tahrir al Sham’s police stations.
SNHR notes that his phone was confiscated, and he hasn’t been allowed to contact any members of his family since his arrest. We fear he may be subjected to torture and go on to be forcibly disappeared, as has happened with 85% of detainees.
SNHR calls for financial and psychological restitution for all Hay’at Tahrir al Sham’s victims and their families, as well as for an end to all arbitrary detention and for the fate of thousands of individuals forcibly disappeared by the Hay’at Tahrir al Sham to be revealed. We note that these arrests are carried out with the objective of spreading fear and terror in the community and blackmailing the detainees’ families. We have additional, well-founded fears for the detainees’ wellbeing due to the spread of COVID-19.
