The bodies of two brothers (Iraqi refugees), Hatem (age 43) and Hisham (age 35) Mahmoud, were found by the Syrian Democratic Forces internal security forces’ personnel in Sector Five of al Hawl Camp for IDPs near al Hawl town in the eastern suburbs of Hasaka governorate on August 10, 2022, bearing gunshot wounds.

On the same day, residents of the camp found the body of Osama Marwan al Fares (age 43) from al Mayadeen city in eastern Deir Ez-Zour governorate*, in Sector Four of the camp, bearing gunshot wounds.

The camp is controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces. SNHR has so far been unable to identify the party responsible for their deaths. Although the controlling forces in the area bear responsibility for revealing the party responsible for the killing, these forces haven’t launched any investigation, which indicates they may be involved in this murder and similar incidents.


* According to information SNHR received from activists at the time, we published a news report stating that one of the dead bodies found in al Hawl Camp on August 10, 2022, was that of a victim named as Samer Rawad (age 33) from Deir Ez-Zour city,. After further investigation, however, we’ve learnt that the victim’s name is Osama Marwan al Fares (age 43) from al Mayadeen city in eastern Deir Ez-Zour governorate. The news report was updated accordingly on August 16, 2022.
