Mustafa Omar al Bakour, a ten-year-old boy from Shanan village in Jabal al Zaweya south of Idlib governorate, was killed on March 30, 2022 by the explosion of cluster munition remnants left over from previous shelling by Syrian-Russian alliance forces on farmland near Shanan village, which is under the joint control of armed opposition factions and Hay’at Tahrir al Sham.
SNHR notes that remnants of explosive weapons continue to pose a serious threat to civilians. We’ve issued many reports on cluster munitions and other weapons remnants and called for the supply of the equipment required to help the locals remove the explosive remnants.
SNHR has also recorded the Syrian regime’s use of anti-personnel mines, which will continue to constitute a real and lethal threat to people, particularly children, for several years to come.
We have documented hundreds of injuries resulting from cluster munitions remnants, and emphasize that the international community must intervene to protect civilians in Syria from these continuous killings.
