A man from Shahba city in the suburbs of Suwayda governorate, named as Nawras Taysir Abu Zain al Din, born in 1997, was arrested by Syrian regime forces on December 19, 2021, by Syrian regime forces in al Abbasyyin station area in Damascus city as he was heading to Homs city, detaining him in connection with his criticism of poor living conditions in Suwayda city in 2020. Then, he was taken to an undisclosed location.
The arrest was conducted without any legal arrest warrant being issued by a court, with no member of Nawras’s family being informed of his arrest or his whereabouts, and with his phone being confiscated, preventing him from contacting his family or a lawyer. SNHR fears that he will be subjected to torture and ultimately classified as forcibly ‘disappeared’, like approximately 85 percent of all detained persons in Syria.
SNHR demands that financial and therapeutic compensation be provided to the victims and their families, as well as insisting on an end to all arbitrary arrests which aim to spread terror among Syrians and to the blackmailing of families, and we further demand that the fates of thousands of people disappeared by HTS be revealed as we have serious concerns for the detainees’ wellbeing, particularly given the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
