A man, named as Suleiman Nouri Nu’man, from Bouzikiya village, which is administratively a part of Afrin city in the northern suburbs of Aleppo governorate, was arrested by Syrian National Army personnel in June 2018* for dealing with Syrian Democratic Forces. Since then, he has been classified as forcibly disappeared, with the SNA denying his arrest and preventing anyone, even a lawyer, from visiting him. On November 27, 2021, SNA personnel informed his family of his death in al Ra’ee Prison in al Ra’ee village in northeastern Aleppo governorate, returning his body to his family the next day. SNHR data from numerous sources confirms that he was in good health at the time of his arrest, indicating that he probably died due to torture and lack of healthcare in the prison.
We can confirm that at least 3,641 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in opposition detention centers, constituting a grave threat to the detainees’ wellbeing.
SNHR notes that approximately 49 Syrian citizens have died due to torture in opposition detention center.

* We previously published a news report stating that Suleiman Nu’man was arrested by Syrian National Army in June 2019. Following subsequent investigation, we have confirmed that the victim was arrested in June 2018. We accordingly edited the news report to reflect this as of November 30, 2021.
