A 51-year-old female lawyer, named as Najah Omar Arous, from Kwayra village which is administratively a part of Afrin city in the northern suburbs of Aleppo governorate, was arrested by the Syrian National Army in Rajo village, which is administratively a part of Afrin city, on October 23, 2021 and taken to the central prison in Afrin city.
SNHR notes that no member of the lawyer’ family was informed of her arrest or whereabouts, with her phone being confiscated, preventing her from contacting her family. SNHR fears she will be subjected to torture and ultimately classified as forcibly ‘disappeared’, like approximately 85 percent of all detained persons in Syria.
SNHR demands that financial and psychological compensation be provided to the victims and their families, in addition to demanding an end to all arbitrary arrests which aim to spread terror among Syrians and to blackmail the families, and calls for the Armed Opposition factions/ the SNA to disclose of the fates of thousands of people disappeared by its forces as we have serious concerns for the detainees’ wellbeing, given the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
