A man from Aleppo city, named as Muhammad Alaa al Jalil, who lives in Idlib city and works as a supervisor at Ernesto sanctuary for cats, a centre in the city providing care for cats and other animals who survived the war in Syria, was arrested by Hay’at Tahrir al Sham personnel in a raid on his home on July 19, 2021, and taken to an undisclosed location.

SNHR notes that none of the detainee’s family members were informed of his arrest, with his phones being confiscated, preventing him from contacting anyone. SNHR fears that he will be subjected to torture and ultimately classified as forcibly ‘disappeared’ like approximately 85 percent of the individuals detained in Syria.

SNHR can confirm that at least 3,585 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in HTS’ detention centers, constituting a grave threat to the detainees’ wellbeing, given the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
