A man from Hama city, named as Ahmad Muhammad Nour Hennou, was arrested by Syrian regime forces in June 2011, while he was heading to his workplace in Hama city. He was released in December 2012 from Adra Central Prison in Damascus suburbs governorate, and rearrested again after his release as he was passing through a checkpoint in al Salamiya city in west of Hama governorate while heading from Adra Prison to his home in Hama city.
Ahmad was transferred between several prisons during the period of his second detention, with Adra Central Prison being the last one where his health deteriorated to a fatal degree while he was deprived of the required medical care.
On June 13, 2021, Syrian regime forces informed his family of his death in al Basel Military Hospital in Homs city and handed his body over to them. SNHR data from numerous sources confirms that he was in good health at the time of his arrest, indicating that he probably died due to torture and lack of healthcare in the prison.
SNHR can confirm that at least 131,106 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in the regime’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to the detainees’ wellbeing, particularly given the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
SNHR notes that at least 14,315 Syrian citizens have died due to torture in Syrian regime forces’ detention center.
