Muhannad Muhammad al Ahmad, from Jmala village in the western suburbs of Daraa governorate, was arrested in 2018 when he was 24 years old by Syrian regime forces, while he was participating in a training course at the Civil Police training centre in Damascus city, and imprisoned in al Mudahama security branch’s prison in the city before being transferred to Seydnaya Military Prison in Damascus suburbs governorate. Since then, he has been classified as forcibly disappeared, with the Syrian regime denying any knowledge of his arrest and preventing anyone, even a lawyer, from visiting him. On December 2, 2020, Syrian regime forces informed his family of his death in Tishreen Military Hospital and handed his body over to them bearing signs of torture sustained in Seydnaya Military Prison.
SNHR can confirm that at least 130,689 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in the regime’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to the detainees’ wellbeing, given the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
SNHR notes that at least 14,269 Syrian citizens have died due to torture in Syrian regime forces’ detention center.
