Two civilians from the same family, Odai Ismail al Ahmad and Muhammad Ali al Ahmad, aged 16 and 18 respectively, from Abu Serra village which is administratively a part of Ein Eisa city in the northern suburbs of Raqqa governorate, were killed when a shell left over from previous shelling of unknown origin exploded in the village on November 27, 2020.
SNHR notes that such munitions will continue to constitute a real threat to people and we have issued a number of reports on cluster munitions and the remnants of other weapons, in which we urged the provision of special equipment to help civilians in removing these explosive remnants.
SNHR has also documented the Syrian regime’s use of anti-personnel mines which will continue to constitute a grave threat to residents of these areas, particularly children, for many years to come. We have recorded hundreds of injuries caused by the explosion of remnants of cluster munitions, and the international community must intervene to protect civilians in Syria from these ongoing killing operations.
