A 25- year-old conscript of the military Police of the Syrian regime forces, named as Rami Ahmad al Thiab, was originally from al Safa village which is administratively a part of al Jawadiya county in the northeastern suburbs of Hasaka governorate. Rami was arrested by the Syrian Democratic Forces in September 2019 when he was passing through a checkpoint in al Qameshli city in the northeastern suburbs of the governorate. Since then, he had been classified as forcibly disappeared, with the SDF denying his arrest and preventing anyone, even a lawyer, from visiting him or revealing his whereabouts. On August 12, 2020, SNHR received information confirming that he had died in SDF’s detention center in al Qameshli city. Our data from numerous sources confirms that he was in good health at the time of his arrest, indicating that he probably died due to torture.

SNHR notes that about 3,337 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in the SDF’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to their wellbeing.
