This photo shows a packed crowd of Syrian citizens in front of a market, run by the Syrian Trade Corporation, an affiliate of the Syrian regime’s Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection in al Baramka neighborhood in Damascus city. The market has implemented the regime’s smart card program, which was launched under the pretext of enabling citizens to purchase food supplies in an organized and planned manner at state-subsidized prices. The photo also shows that there is a great number of elderly people, who are the most vulnerable to infection with the COVID-19 pandemic, are crowding with the lack of social distancing clearly violating all the precautionary measures stipulated by the World Health Organization to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic among the public.
The SNHR notes that this is further confirmation that a regime responsible for the killing of hundreds of thousands of Syrians and the displacement of 12 million more as refugees and IDPs will not care for its people.
The Syrian regime has failed to even attempt to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic among Syrian citizens, neglecting to apply the most basic precautionary measures stipulated by the World Health Organization.
