A man from Theyban town in the eastern suburbs of Deir Ez-Zour governorate named as Athab Aziz Saleh al Shlash was arrested by Syrian Democratic Forces in 2019 during a raid on his home in the town. Since then, he has been classified as forcibly disappeared, with the SDF denying his arrest and preventing anyone, even a lawyer, from visiting him or revealing his whereabouts. On July 18, 2020, his body was handed over to his family bearing signs of torture sustained inside an SDF detention cent in Hasaka governorate. SNHR notes that about 3,337 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in the SDF’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to their wellbeing.
