Mustafa Abdul Raouf al Hamshou and Hussein Ali al Abboud were killed when fixed-wing warplanes which we believe were Russian fired missiles that landed in the vicinity of al Mozara village in Jabal al Zaweya in the southern suburbs of Idlib governorate on June 8, 2020. SNHR notes that this attack which was carried out by Russian forces constitutes a breach of the ceasefire agreement reached after consultations between the Turkish and Russian presidents that came into force on March 6, 2020.
Through this indiscriminate and random bombardment that does not distinguish between civilians and combatants, Russian forces have committed a violation of international humanitarian law which constitutes a war crime. SNHR has recorded hundreds of killings of this nature which have been committed by Russian forces since their intervention in Syria in September 2015. With the death toll of victims killed by Russian forces exceeding 6,800 Syrian civilian citizens, the international community must intervene to protect civilians in Syria from these ongoing killing operations.
